Who we are
Founder & Principal Architect
James “Austin” Mangels is the principal architect behind Ground Up Designs. He began his career in 2012 as a Drafting Intern at a local Prescott architecture firm, where he spent years building a strong foundation in practical, real‑world design. His interest in how structures come together led him to serve as a Plans Examiner for two local jurisdictions for nearly five years, deepening his understanding of building codes, construction methods, and the realities of bringing projects from concept to completion.
Returning to the architecture field full-time in 2021, Austin continued his apprenticeship and recently earned his architectural registration. His experience spans a wide range of project types—from new homes, additions, and remodels to small commercial tenant improvements, offices, and warehouse spaces.
Austin’s approach is grounded, thoughtful, and centered on creating well-built spaces that serve their purpose with clarity and comfort. He believes good architecture doesn’t have to be complicated—it simply needs to be honest, functional, and thoughtfully designed for real life.
